Farmgate’s walkway crisis

The encroachment on Farmgate’s footpaths and foot overbridge is not merely a local nuisance; it reflects a systematic problem of urban governance.

Farmgate’s footpaths as well as its foot overbridge, which was built to facilitate heavy pedestrian movement,  are frequently occupied by unauthorised vendors and street sellers. Although eviction operations are often conducted, vendors frequently return within hours or days with food stalls, clothing racks and accessory displays. Consequently, pedestrians are routinely forced onto the main roads, increasing the risk of accidents.

While the total eradication of street vending is economically unrealistic, the government can regulate where and when vendors operate through clear and enforceable zoning laws. For instance, highly congested areas should be designated as zero-tolerance zones, with regular monitoring and enforcement. At the same time, less congested areas could be designated as legal holiday or evening markets, allowing vendors to operate only during specific hours.

Such a balanced approach would protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of accidents without undermining street vendors’ livelihoods.
